WINE AND GASTRONOMY IN TUSCANY



The gastronomical tradition of Costa degli Etruschi is known all over the world for its richness and the variety of the dishes it proposes The fish, fished out every day, is the protagonist of a thousand greedy recipes.
From the great “cacciucco alla livornese” ( flavoursome fish soup), to the risotto with cuttlefish ink, and then dentex, breams, squids, shell fishes and oily fishes cooked with ability and variety.
Fish festival in Piombino
This festival, is a tradition for this country. It takes place the last Sunday of July, and you can see the local fish cooked in a big fryed pan.

The protagonist of the hinterland is, instead, the meat, such as “chianina”, a precious race of cow and the game, especially the boar.
At the end of November and the first days of December in Suvereto you can enjoy the Boar Festival.

Vegetables goes with all dishes. The local specialty is the violet artichoke.
All years from the end of April until the beginning of May, in Riotorto you will find the Artichoke Festival.

     

Other typical products are cheeses, honey, very sweet melons, bread, cakes and high quality wines.
Also olive oil has an excellent place in the typical products of this area.

Along the “Wine Road” you can see the D.O.C. Bolgheri and wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia, famous worldwide.

     


The local wines that deserves to be known belong to the D.O.C. Val di Cornia. The production area comprises the Municipalities of Campiglia, Suvereto, Sassetta, Piombino and San Vincenzo. On the territory there are many typical and little wine cellars run by family managements and important and international realities, such as the so called cellar “Petra”, great work of the architect Mario Botta, far very few km far from Borgo La Contessa.

Cantine Aperte, is the most important event in Italy in which the protagonists are wine, people and their territories. Since 1992, the last Sunday of May the cellars, in partnership with Italian Movement of Wine open their doors to the public, favouring in this way the direct contact with all wine fans..

 
10th August 2008
This is a traditional summer appointment. The Italian Movement of wine, in one of the most beautiful nights of the year, offers the tourists the chance to enjoy “the rain of tears of San Lorenzo” together with high quality wine
 

Septeber 2008
The will to discover and live the extraordinary atmosphere of a party linked to the period of the harvest, gave the chance to the Italian Movement of wine, to dedicate one Sunday of September to celebrate this party

 
8th-9th November 2008
The year 2008 takes with it a new event which takes place in the second week-end of November. In this occasion, the cellars will open to share with the wine fans the happiness of the new wine, the so called “Novello” and the past years wines, together with the season products.
 
December 2008
“Christmas in cellar” is the last event which sees cellars of the Italian Movement of Wine a s protagonists. The people of enoturists will transfer the magical atmosphere of Christmas into the cellars for an appointment that becomes an occasion to find and think about the gift to put under the Christmas three.
