Holidays on Etruscan Coast

The colours and the scents of Tuscany blend with the lights and fragrance of the Mediterranean  Sea along the Costa degli Etruschi (Etruscan Coast).
The Etruscan sites, the crystal-clear sea, the mediaeval villages, the natural parks and reserves, all make this land of Tuscany unique.

Here every season of the year has its own striking beauty. You can choose;  first of all the sea, edged with long beaches that border shady pinewoods or cliffs carved by the wind and the waves. This is the living corner of the Mediterranean Sea. Then Nature.

The environment, which is incredibly rich, shelters botanical oasis, sanctuaries of fauna, woods and thick pine forests.
The countryside is crossed by the prestigious Wine Route, characterised by noble vines and silver olive trees. The magic itinerary unwinding between the sea and the countryside gives you the opportunity to discover artistic, cultural and architectural treasures, the heritage of this land. The Etruscans have left important traces of their past presence, such as the only necropolis ever built by the sea  nearest Gulf of Baratti and Populonia Castle.
The medieval villages of the Etruscan Coast situated between the see and the hills or set in the green countryside, have the privilege of making a long ancient past live again. Campiglia Marittima,  Suvereto, Bolgheri, Massa Marittima are characterised by paved lanes, silent churches, museums, old graft shops and buildings overlooked by towers. A sort of fairy-like itinerary reveals Etruscan, Roman and Medicean archaeological remains, castles, parish churches, small historical theatres and villas half-hidden in the green vegetation, an ideal setting for summer concerts and shows

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF BARATTI AND POPULONIA
It stretches from the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti, where the Etruscan and Roman town of Populonia rose, known since ancient times for the intense metallurgical activity linked to the production of iron. From Spring 2007, the Park includes not only the necropolis and the industrial buildings still visible today, but also the acropolis of Populonia with its temples and thermal buildings, and the medieval monastery of San Quirico. Within the Park, at the experimental centre, on specific days and at certain times, adults and children can discover the ancient working techniques employed for stone and pottery.

ETRUSCAN MUSEUM GASPARRI
Situated in Populonia. Created in 1959, this museum displays the private gallery of the Gasparri family, put together  in early 20th century with finds from Etruscan necropolis of Baratti and Villanovan necropolis of Poggio delle Granate. Over 2000 items, including Etruscan and imported pottery: Etruscan, Campania and Attic vases, Etruscan candelabra in iron and lead, jugs, bucchero (black Etruscan pottery) work and fibulae.

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF THE TERRITORY OF POPULONIA
Situated in the historical centre of Piombino, facing the sea, it represents the natural completion to the visit of the Park of Baratti. Using evocative reconstructions of the landscape, ancient activities and settings, the museum illustrates the transformations of the promontory, from prehistory to the modern era.
